In their words: Ibrahim Ahmed on a career in luxury retail cleaning

From marble cleaner to UAE Operations Manager: Ibrahim on people, detail and luxury retail cleaning.

Ibrahim Ahmed began his career as a marble cleaner.

Marble was where Ibrahim Ahmed started. Long before he managed teams, his job was to look after it.

It's a demanding first teacher. Marble is porous and calcium-based, so an acidic cleaner, a spilt coffee or the wrong pad can leave a dull mark that no amount of wiping will lift. Caring for it well is preservation, not just cleaning, and it rewards patience and the right method over speed.

Today he is our UAE Operations Manager, managing our teams across luxury retail. Between the two came room attendant, public area attendant, coordinator, supervisor, assistant manager and manager, including pre-openings of luxury hotels.

We asked him about the work, the people and what he would tell someone starting out. These are his answers, in his own words.

Every role on the way

Each step on that list is a different view of the same work. A marble floor, a guest's room, the lobbies and corridors everyone walks through, and then the people who look after them. A coordinator plans the work, a supervisor holds the standard on the day, and a manager makes sure the team can do both. Ibrahim has done each of those jobs.

A hotel pre-opening is one of the hardest tests in the industry: every room and every public space has to reach the standard on the first day, with no time to settle in. It's where a team learns what it can do.

One of those pre-openings was in Dubai, at a hotel now ranked No. 4 in The World's 50 Best Hotels (2026) and named the best hotel in the Middle East. Ibrahim was part of the team that supported its opening.

What luxury retail cleaning asks of a team

In luxury retail cleaning, the standard is set by everyone who walks through the door, and it doesn't drop on a quiet morning. Ibrahim puts it plainly.

“Luxury service is not only about how something looks. It is about attention to detail, consistency and care in everything we do. In luxury environments, even the smallest details matter.”

Our UAE teams look after boutiques in destinations such as The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates, where those details are seen by every visitor, every day.

People first

Over his career, Ibrahim has seen the tools of the job change. What hasn't changed, he says, is where a good operation starts.

“Technology and systems have changed significantly, but the most important thing has stayed the same: people. A successful operation starts with a motivated and well-trained team.”

Ask him what he's proudest of, and it isn't the title.

“The journey itself. But more than the titles, the people I have worked with and the teams I have developed.”

Our UAE team is over 300 people, and a close one, with sports and activities together. Each month, clients nominate the people they see going above and beyond, and the whole team marks it. Our teams there also work to a structured career path, so everyone can see their next step.

His advice for a first day

For anyone starting where he started, his advice is simple to say and harder to live by.

“Respect the job, respect your colleagues, learn something every day, and never be afraid to start from the bottom. Every position teaches you something.”

Where it leads

His own summary of the journey is one sentence long.

“Your starting point does not define your destination.”

Thank you, Ibrahim.
